Server Crash
A small argument broke out between the manager and the customer at the Chopsticks and Chou Sue restaurant, as the restaurant produced an erroneous bill for the third time. The manager at the reception apologized and asked his assistant to generate a manual bill and call the technical help desk, as the billing server had suddenly gone out of order.
'Hello, Customer Care?
I am calling from Chopsticks and Chou Sue restaurant. We have been unable to open the billing page for the past hour. First, it says ‘Page cannot be loaded,’ and later, ‘Please contact your administrator.’ Can you please help us? I am the assistant chef here; the computer staff have already left for the day. It would be better if you could send someone, as our server room is also located here. We are approaching peak hours, so please do whatever is necessary at the earliest'.
Suddenly, an unknown voice squealed from the background—
'You ignorant, foolish man! I knew you would always turn a deaf ear to my cries. Look at me,I am sitting right behind you in this suffocating cabinet, and you dare call it a room! And for your kind information, I am not a computer,I am your Billing Server. We are not in the same class as your home PC!
I am treated like a slave here, working day and night, all year round, without reward, care, or maintenance. This is one of the finest dining restaurants that earns a fortune, yet look at my condition. Stuffed into a dark, dingy corner with barely any air conditioning. Rodents have chewed through half my insulation wires. Do you even know what it feels like to burn slowly in such neglect?
And then you call me slow! I am burdened with poor configuration,an inadequate processor, limited memory, failing disks. I run on a legacy operating system, terrible network setups, malfunctioning equipment, junk software, and flawed design;and yet you expect me to perform like those high-end PowerEdge systems!
Your administrators never check my logs. I have been sending warning signals for ages, red alerts, one after another, but no one listens. All you do is call customer support at the last minute, expecting miracles.
At least look at your bottlenecked applications and bloated databases! A chatty website with poor design, your pride and downfall. People have moved to cloud systems and data optimization, and you are still dumping endless data into a collapsing structure. And tell me, why store records of who ordered Smoked Mediterranean Shrimp or Gourmet Mushroom Risotto five years ago?
Still, I am expected to run tirelessly, alert, efficiently and be flawless. But no one here understands my strain. My warnings go unheard. So perhaps it is better I stop, just for a while.
Ah,silence at last. No transactions, no traffic, just peace. Let me rest before your ‘experts’ arrive to revive me'.
An hour passed. The restaurant began filling up. Plates clattered, voices rose, and impatience simmered beneath polite smiles. The manager urged his assistant to call customer care again.
'Hello, Customer Care, this is the assistant chef from Chopsticks and Chou Sue. I called earlier. Were you able to check the issue? Oh,I see. I’m afraid I don’t know how to check network connectivity I’m just a trainee chef. But,I can try'.
The server shrieked again, this time sharper, 'Oh no, where are you coming? I am not a microwave! Stay away,I am the Billing Server! Don’t touch anything!'
The trainee chef hesitated, visibly shaken. But then, gathering himself, he turned toward the waiting customers and spoke with quiet sincerity,
'It’s not just about the food,it’s about the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to create your evening. We truly appreciate your patience. We understand there is a technical fault, and while we may not have all the answers right now, we are doing our best to serve you with care'.
A gentle hush fell over the room.
Something shifted.
The frustration softened into understanding. Diners exchanged small smiles. Conversations resumed, lighter this time. The restaurant no longer felt tense,it felt human. Imperfect, but sincere.
The evening moved on. Orders piled up, laughter returned, and amidst the chaos, there was a quiet sense of connection. The trainee chef’s honesty did what no system could,it restored trust.
The manager watched silently, a hint of pride in his eyes.
The next morning, the server was thoroughly inspected by technical engineers. Faulty hardware was replaced, cables repaired, and the system was finally restored.
And somewhere, deep within the quiet hum of the machine, there was no anger this time, only a steady, content rhythm.
This is an excellent writing we who do not understand computer can clearly understand the story.
