Resurrection (Part 7)

Echoes from the Forest

Paul woke with a sudden thunderclap. He jolted upright with lightning flashing almost into his eyes.

“Madam, please wake up,it’s about to rain. We need to hurry… we’re in the midst of a forest.”

The sky was covered with deep grey clouds, hanging low as if they were resting upon the earth itself. In front of them stretched a beautiful forest, layers of green overlapping in countless shades og green.A little stream flowed nearby, its gentle murmur almost out of place against the tension building in the air.

Nefertiti was exhausted. Her body could hardly move. A sudden gust of wind swept through, as if announcing the storm’s arrival. It grew stronger with each passing moment, rising into a haunting howl. Dust lifted from the ground, swirling into circles, dimming the vibrant greens into a muted haze.

Before she could gather herself, Paul exclaimed,“Madam, faster!we have very little time. Somehow this adventure never seems to end. Before we fall into more trouble, let’s find shelter before the storm worsens.”

The once lively forest now seemed veiled in grey, its green heart hidden beneath the rising dust. The trees began to sway, bending from one side to another, their leaves trembling in the storm.

“Madam, run!” Paul shouted.

Nefertiti forced herself forward, running as fast as she could. Her breath grew heavy, making each step a struggle. The air thickened around her, dust and wind swirling together engulfing everything within. She could barely see.

Between flashes of lightning, she caught glimpses of green alive, enduring within the storm. She kept running, not knowing where she was going, only feeling the pull to move forward.

That was the last time she heard Paul.

Violent cries of unseen creatures echoed through the forest, sharp and haunting, yet nothing was visible through the storm. A giant tree uprooted before her, crashing down and blocking her path. This was followed by smaller ones, torn from the earth and flung aside by the furious winds. She was saved by an inch.

Her heart pounded wildly. She tried to run faster, but her feet tangled in creeping vines. She fell hard onto the ground. This time, she couldn’t rise. Her body had given up. Mud clung to her face, her breath came in shallow bursts, and the storm raged on as if it had no end.

The forest, once alive in shades of green, now howled in agony.

Time passed.

Slowly, the storm began to weaken. The violent winds softened into whispers. And then came heavy, relentless rain.

She lay there drenched completely. Her body was trembling as all her strength was nearly gone.

After what felt like forever, she forced herself up.

“Paul!” she cried, her voice breaking.

She stumbled forward and searched for him  everywhere her eyes could reach. Her heart sank deeper with every passing moment.

“Paul!” she screamed again and again, her voice swallowed by the vast forest.

The rain slowed. It softened into a quiet dripping with water falling gently from leaves, one drop at a time. The wind turned cold, piercing through her, making her shiver. The storm had passed.

But Paul was nowhere.

She tried to retrace her steps,at least what little she could remember. Her feet dragged across the wet earth as she called out his name, again and again… but there was no answer.Only silence.

Her heart cracked open under the weight of it.She fell to her knees.

“Please… help…” she whispered, before breaking into uncontrollable sobs.

Paul had been her companion for only a few years in this mortal world, yet he had become one of her closest bonds. He had taught her more than she had ever learned before, more than she had even known when she was alive.

She had believed… this friendship would last beyond lifetimes. He was always there like a shadow beside her becoing her guide, her companion. He was her quiet strength in the strange, unwanted adventures they kept stumbling into. His awkward humor, his strange remarks had lightened even the darkest moments.

And now…He was gone.

The loss pierced through her chest like a sharp wind cutting and leaving behind an unbearable emptiness.

The forest stood still around her, washed clean by the rain. The leaves glistened in deep shades of green once more. The air moved softly now.

But her heart felt shattered into a thousand pieces. She clutched her chest, gasping through tears, feeling as though something within her had been torn away forever.

“I can’t…” she whispered, her voice fading. “I can’t do this without you…”

The thought crept in slowly, a desire to give up,to stop and disappear into the silence around her.

The forest breathed again not in chaos, but in quiet rhythm.Yet inside her, everything still stormed.
