Resurrection (Part 6)

The Golden Glow

It was dark. The sky was scattered with bright stars.Breaking the uneasy silence, Paul exclaimed,“Madam… are we lost in some trap forever?”

Nefertiti replied in a steady tone,“Paul, let’s not lose hope. Let’s take the path winding along the river. Maybe that’s the way.”

They kept trudging forward. There was silence only the flickering light of fireflies guiding their way. Shadows of silver and blue drifted across the land, creating a misty stillness, as if the universe itself was quietly reminding them of its vastness. After walking for what felt like hours across uneven, hilly terrain, they noticed a faint shimmer in the distance.

As they stepped closer, the world unfolded into something unreal.

Narrow lanes of vibrant candies appeared jellybeans, chocolates wrapped in dazzling colors all arranged in perfect, almost unnatural order.

Paul exclaimed, half in disbelief,“Madam… are we entering a Sugar Crush game for real? Or is this some kind of VFX?Whatever it is, I’m sure I’m not entering Charlie’s Chocolate Factory!”

As soon as they entered, the candies bowedas if greeting them, inviting them into an unknown game.

At the center stood a wide circular arena. Flames rose in controlled bursts, spiraling upward like dancing serpents. The fire glowed golden-yellow brilliant, mesmerizing.A fire show.

Nefertiti’s eyes sharpened. She tightened her grip on Paul’s hand.“Be careful, Paul. Do not give in to any invitation. Keep moving slowly. Nothing here feels right.”

Just then, a jellybean shaped figure approached Paul. It handed him a bright candy and gestured silently toward the arena. A drop of red jelly slipped from its finger, melting into the soft spun-sugar ground beneath them.

Before Nefertiti could stop him, Paul stepped forward. He ate the candy.

A sudden rush spread through him warm, intoxicating. His face lit up after the long exhaustion of hunger.

A crowd of candies gathered around the arena. Trees twisted like giant lollipops, their branches dripping with molten caramel. Rivers of syrup shimmered under the golden glow. The air felt thick overwhelmingly sweet.

Nefertiti paused. “This feels… different.”Paul laughed lightly. “Different? This is amazing!”Figures began to emerge dressed in elaborate costumes, their faces completely hidden behind masks. Bright. Exaggerated and theatrical. They moved with restless energy.

At the center, the fire show intensified. The masked figures circled the arena, tossing flames between their hands with rhythmic precision.Paul’s eyes gleamed. “I have to try this.”“Paul” Nefertiti began. But he was already moving.

A torch was placed in his hand.At first, he hesitated. Then he followed their movements ,awkward, uncertain. The crowd responded instantly, encouraging, cheering and pulling him in.Someone handed him another candy. He ate it.

A sharper surge of confidence rushed through him. With another candy, his movements grew faster, more precise, more controlled. Each time he consumed more, the crowd cheered louder not with joy, but with expectation. He kept consuming and performing.

The sweetness grew heavy but he couldn’t stop. His breath thickened. His body resisted. A wave of nausea rose within him.But still he continued.

His movements turned aggressive. The fire no longer danced. It roared.

“Paul, stop!” Nefertiti called out.He didn’t hear her.He staggered. The flames surged higher.Everything became too bright. Too loud.

And then the torch slipped from his hand and Paul collapsed.

The flames died instantly. The crowd stepped back as if this, too, was part of the performance.

“Paul!”,Nefertiti rushed to him, dropping to her knees. She rubbed his hands and feet vigorously. His face had drained of color. His breath was shallow, fragile.“Paul… wake up…” her voice trembled.

“Come back,” she whispered, her chest tightening.

The fire pits flickered again, softer now.

The candy world stretched endlessly but something had changed. The masked figures stood before him.One stepped forward and offered candy.

“Take it,” a voice echoed from everywhere.Paul hesitated.

His body remembered the rush, the power, the applause. His hand began to move, almost obediently. But this time… he looked closer. There were no faces.Only eyes watching what he could do and how far he would go.

Something shifted within him.For the first time,he felt the emptiness beneath the noise. He slowly curled his fingers into a fist. And pulled his hand back.

“No.”The word was soft.But unshakable.

Slowly, the fire settled into a steady, contained glow. The figures froze. The candies dissolved. The world softened.

Nefertiti exhaled.

“I thought I was becoming stronger,” Paul said, his voice low.A pause.“I was just… consuming.”

Nefertiti nodded.

He placed a hand over his abdomen.A faint warmth remained, not burning, not demanding.Just steady. For the first time,he did not feel the need to prove anything
